I. Introductory Course

Introduction to Swedish Massage (15h)

This course will teach you the basic manoeuvres of swedish massage, indications and counter indications of massage, and the necessary techniques in order to give a complete massage.

II. Professional Program

a. Swedish Massage Practitioner (415h)

This training is designed to form Swedish massage practitioners. Swedish massage consists of a variety of techniques and manoeuvres applied to the muscles, such as: effleurages, petrissages, percussions, and frictions, which promotes blood circulation, releases muscular tension and relaxes the body.

Course Content Introduction (15h) This course will teach you the basic manoeuvres, indications and contraindications, and all techniques and tools necessary to give a complete swedish massage.

Swedish massage techniques (150h) During the session, the student will learn all swedish massage techniques, working with all the muscle groups and the importance of each muscle attachment point.

Supervised clinic (40h) In addition to the practice hours during the session, there will be training periods where the student will work on the public under teacher supervision. Students will be evaluated on their performance and will be given constructive feedback.

Anatomy (45h) The student will learn the musculoskeletal system as well as other major body systems and their application to massage.

Physiopathology (45h) The physiopathology course teaches the student how to adapt their massage technique to the physiological effects of their client’s specific pathology.

Professional Aspects (15h) In this course the student learns the limitations of massage and the use of alternative and conventional medicine. Also, students will learn about different therapies and know which ones and under what circumstances to refer them to their clients.

Ethics and legal aspects (15h) This course through the study of the code of ethics, teaches the practitioner the current legislation on the practice of massage.

Sexuality and professional practice (45h) This course teaches the massage practitioners to recognize and understand the responsibility they have towards their clients and their boundaries as professionals. Moreover, skills are acquired to deal with different situations of a sexual nature. Notions of ethics and integrity are also dealt with.

Helping relations (30h) This course prepares the future practitioner to deal personally and professionally with clients.

Interview techniques (15h) This course enables students to apply concepts concerning communication and interpersonal skills, in a massage therapist setting. Case studies are also undertaken to prepare students to work in the professional environment.

b. Advanced Massage Therapy (600h)

To become an advanced massage therapist, the student can pursue studies in the same approach that was initially chosen at the practitioner level, or chose a new approach. This 1000 hours course includes a mandatory professional program of 415 hours and an additional 585 hours of advanced massage therapy. Experience and supervised clinic hours are emphasized in this program since it promotes professional integration and success in this growing market.

Pre-requisite: Massage Practitioner (415h)

Course Content

  • Massage techniques of 150 hours. You have the choice of one of the following approaches: Therapeutic Swedish, Shiatsu, Chinese (Tuina)
  • Supervised clinic (40 hours)
  • Personal integration and professional intervention (45 hours)
  • Helping relations and interview technique (45 hours)
  • Administration, marketing, file keeping (45 hours).
  • Anatomy / physiology / pathology (45 hours)
  • Optional classes: psychopathology, psychosomatics, psychology, nutrition (45 hours)
  • Complements and\or specialization in the disciplines of your choice (100-225h)
  • Additional techniques: lymphatic drainage, sports massage, reflexology, therapeutic touch (45-100 hours)
